Princess Cut FAQs

A princess cut diamond is a modern, square-shaped cut characterized by sharp corners and a complex arrangement of facets that enhance sparkle. It is the second most popular diamond shape after round brilliant diamonds, celebrated for its contemporary aesthetics and excellent light performance. The princess cut is available in a variety of carat weights and other 4Cs of diamonds, pairing beautifully with almost any setting style.

Princess cut diamonds feature a square or slightly rectangular outline when viewed from above, typically featuring a flat table and a pointed pavilion (the underside) that converges in a pyramid shape. Their sharp corners distinguish them from rounded or softened-edge cuts like the cushion cut.
The princess cut uses a modified brilliant-cut facet structure, meaning its facets are designed to maximize sparkle (brilliance) and dispersion (fire). Most princess cuts have 50–58 facets arranged in a chevron pattern on the pavilion, creating a dazzling interplay of light.

Neither option is "better" than the other; the choice depends on what you're looking for in a diamond. Princess cut diamonds offer a more contemporary, angular design, while round cuts result in traditional diamonds with a more classic appeal.
While princess cuts are more affordable, they reflect slightly less light compared to round diamonds, with a refractive quality of approximately 70%. They do, however, retain more of the original rough diamond’s weight (approximately 80%) compared to round diamonds (around 40%), providing better value for their carat weight.
Both diamond shapes have their own charm and shine beautifully in diamond rings and jewelry, making either a worthy centerpiece, depending on personal taste and budget.
